布達拉宮始建於公元七世紀松贊干布時期。十七世紀五世達賴喇嘛時期重建后，成為歷代達賴喇嘛的住息地和政教合一的中心。主體建築分白宮和紅宮，主樓十三層，高115.7米，由寢宮、佛殿、靈塔殿、僧舍等組成。從五世達賴喇嘛起，重大的宗教、政治儀式均在此舉行，同時又是供奉歷世達賴喇嘛靈塔的地方。布 達拉宮依山壘砌，群樓重疊，殿宇嵯峨，氣勢雄偉，有橫空出世、氣貫蒼穹之勢，具有強烈裝飾效果的巨大鎏金寶瓶、幢和經幡，交相映輝，紅、白、黃三種色彩的 鮮明對比，分部合築、層層套接的建築型體，都體現了藏族古建築迷人的特色。布達拉宮是藏式建築的傑出代表，也是中華民族古建築的精華之作。
